Inside Interfilière New York

Oct 06, 2015

Interfilière, the leading event for intimates, swimwear and performance fabrics, hosted by Eurovet and the LYCRA® Brand, just wrapped up its third session in New York. The event, which had representatives from brands and retailers such as Hanesbrands, Komar, Lane Bryant, A&H Sportswear, Swimwear Anywhere and Victoria Secret in attendance, hosted over 50 mills who shared interesting Spring/Summer 2016 fabric trends alongside the launch of the new LYCRA® BEAUTY COOLING technology.

New Trends

One of the industry’s leading fashion experts Jos Berry, CEO and Founder of Concepts Paris took the stage to discuss the ‘Signs of Change’ and the consumer’s fascination with casualness. Wearing a sequined bomber jacket, and looking every bit the part, she openly talked about the fashion industry’s move to be ageless and the need for fashion brands to be versatile. In Berry’s own words, “Night shirts are worn with jeans now.”

Other noted trends were the growing demand for stretch fabrics with a softer, gorgeous feel. “We’re talking about luxury,” said Berry. “We’ve kept everything separated – beachwear, lingerie, activewear. Technology and technical [elements] were also separated. That is changing. It’s all coming together to create interesting [ideas] of casual beauty.”

Athleisure continues to grow and Berry described a sexier side of active now emerging. The sporty trend and consumer’s desire for casual comfort has created an appetite for lightweight construction and hi-tech refinement.

Brugnoli Giovanni, a mill from Italy, received a thumbs up from Berry for their stunning active-inspired fabrics for intimates. Heathered blends such as their Blend 390 with LYCRA® fiber and two-tone bright colored meshes, also with LYCRA® fiber, were front and center. A representative from the Italian mill said they had seen a rise for active in swimwear, and that simple effects in design along with added technical benefits are important to buyers right now.

Even though performance fabrics - and a more ‘sporty’ approach - were all rage, there was no shortage of traditional femininity displayed at the event. Colombian mill Encajes captured the prettier trends at their booth with classic chantilly and other delicate laces featured alongside racy black mesh all with LYCRA® fiber. They presented global trends in intimates from American prep-school chic through to Parisian regal elegance.

New Innovations

These trends confirmed the LYCRA® brand was right on mark with its unveiling of LYCRA® BEAUTY COOLING technology. Supported by research findings that showed women were dissatisfied with moisture management in shapewear, this unique and permanent technology keeps shapewear cool and dry for added comfort.  This latest offering by the LYCRA® brand, and the supporting consumer research, has already been featured in WWD and the Sourcing Journal

The presentation included concept garments that showcased the new performance technology combined with sporty, edgier designs to compliment denim and casual wear. It seems shapewear is no longer for hiding; new designs and softer, easy-to-wear fabrics mean garments are made to be shown off.

Active is transcending all segments, even formal wear,” revealed Carolina Vargas, Marketing V.P. from Protela S.A., a Colombian textile mill and long-time INVISTA partner. “We are showcasing digital printing and sporty meshes but also moisture management, UV protection, shaping, and durability, all with LYCRA® fiber. A soft hand is very important for comfort.”
